The Netflix Legend of Zelda Series: A Good Idea?

News had just hit us that reportedly NetFlix and Nintendo are both working on making a live-action series based off of The Legend of Zelda games. As soon as word got around of this supposedly happening the interwebs was set ablaze. I, along with mostly everyone else, am very excited about this possibly happening. People have been praying to the gods of Nintendo to make something like a movie or anything else with The Legend of Zelda since I can remember. Even before the Super Mario Bros. movie was even being considered. Just as I am excited about this possibly happening I am also curious about whether this could work.

First of all there is the major part of the Zelda games that NetFlix could have problems with: the source material of the games. If they decide to follow the source material, it could be hard to take stuff from the games and transfer it to this live action series. Especially if you consider that the entire Zelda series spans not only a few millennia, but also three alternate timelines. Which timeline will this series be based on and will seasons be set hundreds of years apart? It is possible that the series could set a new timeline where things like a Majora’s Mask could be a bit influential for a season and the events in Twilight Princess could occur in the next.

Another issue could be a royal pain: Princess Zelda. In the games Zelda is the damsel in distress and it is up to Link to save her. This could work in the first season, but what about the next seasons? It could be hard to write for Zelda as it wouldn’t be that much development for her because she is often captured. Zelda is one of the few video game characters from the old days that have evolved from being just a helpless woman that completely depends on the hero to save her to having a bit of a backbone and can actually hold her own and even assist Link in the final battle, but having her not being held captive could, if not written correctly, could just have her be a prop.

This hasn’t been Nintendo’s first go with a Legend of Zelda series and with live-action. Of course we remember, hopefully, the Legend of Zelda cartoon series and again, there’s the Super Mario Bros, movie. Both haven’t really been good. The Legend of Zelda cartoon is just this big campy mess and the Super Mario Bros movie has been considered to be one of the worst video game movies of all time. I doubt that the live-action Zelda series will be that bad, but hopefully the people at Nintendo and NetFlix have done their homework. It will be interesting to see how this will all look.

Do you think a live-action Zelda series is a good idea?

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3: Are we Done Spending the Night with Freddy and Pals?

Creators of the Popular Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise has recently uploaded an image on the Scott Cawthon’s website, scottgames.com teasing that a new game is in the works. A Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 being worked on so quickly after we just gotten a Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 a few months ago in November doesn’t seem so far fetched as we’ve gotten the sequel a mere months after the original game came out.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a point and click survival horror game in which you play a security guard at a restaurant that has to monitor the place. You work each night from 12am to 6am (nine minutes in real time) trying to avoid Freddy and his animatronic friends from killing you, thinking you’re an endoskeleton like them that needs a new suit. In the first game you had cameras in different rooms to monitor the animatronics whereabouts and a door operated by a limited battery supply. In the sequel, you have no door but instead a mask to fool some of the robots, not all of them, cameras, a wind-up box to keep a marionette form getting you, and a flashlight to ward off Freddy and his friends. The first and second Freddy games were a run away hit with a ton of people playing them due to word of mouth, and a ton of Let’s Plays on YouTube. Of course with a hit franchise it is best to milk it for all its worth by making as many sequels as possible, but should Cawthon and Scottgames make another sequel. Have we already gotten over the scariest game of 2014?

A new Freddy’s game might seem cool and all, but there are some signs that people might be over the series. First and foremost, there’s oversaturation. There is a such thing as being exposed too much to something. It hasn’t been longer than a year and we have two FNAF games and a third one coming along. There isn’t enough time to process the first two games, leaving people to get sick and over the next installment and series altogether. I understand Cawthon wanting to strike while the iron is hot, but at this point it’s becoming overkill.

Adding to the oversaturation of the franchise, there’s also the fact its appeal by having these games turned out the way they are. FNAF is a survival horror game. By having these games continuing to be pushed out like they are, its cheapening the whole horror aspect of the games. It’s making them less scary. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 had this problem. They completely reworked the game mechanics that gave the sequel a fresh spin on the original and it was amazing, but the fear factor, the reason why the series became so popular and the reason for its infamy, greatly dwindled as the jump scares got more and more boring as you continued to play unlike the original.

Again, it is cool that we are getting another sequel and it will be nice to see what will be new to the series. By the look of the picture and possibly as theorized according to a video from The Game Theorist, FNAT 3 might be going back to to the first restaurant and might have a more gritter version of Freddy and his friends. This might what the series needs to end for its swan song. Or it might end up being a final nail in the coffin.

What do you think? Do we need another Five Nights at Freddy’s game or do you think the series has jumped the shark?

Should There Be Another Super Mario Bros Movie?

We learned last week that Sony was deciding to make an animated movie off of the immensely popular Super Mario franchise. According to Buzzfeed, thanks to the recent Sony hacks, we all know that Sony Studio Chief Amy Pascal and producer Avi Arad have exchanged emails saying that they are meeting with some important people to try to make a Super Mario movie happen and have acquired the film rights to do the movie. The film hasn’t been greenlit yet. It is in the very earlier stages as according to Arad, nothing has been closed. Not only is Arad trying to make a Mario movie happen, he is trying to make a Mario Movie Franchise as he has an email to Sony Pictures Animation President of Production Michelle Raimo Kouyate saying that he can “think of 3-4 movies right out of the gate on this.”

Like a lot of you when hearing this news I went back to the 1993 live action Mario Bros. Movie. We thought of how bad the movie was. It had some inconsistencies with the actual Mario Bros. games other just having stuff like stores named after Mario Bros enemies and Luigi not looking like Luigi. The actors were not to fond with the movie. Bob Hoskins who played Mario said it was the worst film he has done and Dennis Hopper (King Koopa) said it was an absolute nightmare. Adding to these problems, the movie has a legacy of being one of the worst video game movies ever, along with House of the Dead and whatever Uwe Boll movie you can think of. It is always in the top 5. You can say that the Super Mario Bros was pretty much the reason why Nintendo has been so reluctant of making movies with some of their biggest franchises like Zelda or Metroid, especially here in the states. Nintendo has even on some occasion mentioned, jokingly, how embarrassing the movie was like on Mario’s old website and Shigeru Miyamoto talking about it in some interviews. So with how horrible the live action Super Mario Bros. movie was, why should there be another one?

Another question could be can their be a good Mario movie? For an live action movie, probably not. An animated Mario movie, there seems to be more of a probability. There has been another Mario movie besides the live action film. There was an full length anime movie in the 80s in Japan called Super Mario Bros: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!. It was basically Mario and Luigi’s Adventure in the NES wonderland. They were in a quest to go into the Mushroom Kingdom in their NES console to save Princess Peach. It doesn’t have to be like the anime, there is some inspiration to be drawn from it.

Bottom line, if there is indeed a Mario movie happening, what Sony should be doing is looking closely to what went wrong with the live action movie. They need to learn from those mistakes. Even though it is animated and they could be more freedom to delve into the series than what the people that did the live action movie had, there is still a huge opportunity to screw things up majorly. What another thing Sony should do that the live action film didn’t is draw more from the actual franchise! There is a lot of things to work with, especially now. The games in the Mario series have gotten a bit more story driven. Super Mario Galaxy is the best example of this as not only does it give us a plot other than the usual save Princess Peach from Bowser, but you have to save the actual galaxy as Bowser plans to create one in his own image, doing away with the current one. It also gave us a bit of character background with Rosalina’s story, That is another thing this Mario movie can get its inspiration from. Not the story, but how it is presented. Good luck Sony, you’ll need it…

What are your thoughts on a new Mario movie being made? Is it a good idea or will it be bad? Leave your comments please as I would love to hear them.

Does It Suck? – Smosh Food Battle: The Game

For those who don’t know who Smosh are, they are a comedic YouTube duo comprised of one Ian Hecox and one Anthony Padilla. They upload videos of them in querky nerd skits referencing movies, video games, and current pop culture on YouTube that millions of people, mostly kids, watch. Since the creation of their channel in 2005, they have garnered more than 20,000,000 subscribers and billions of views. They have their own gaming channel as well, Smosh Games, which millions are subscribed to as well.

So what do you do when you are one of the top elite of nerdy gamers on the internet and made a business out of it? You further expand your business and make a video game of course. That’s exactly what they did. Smosh Food Battle: The Game has been out for a while, and honestly I’ve been curious about how the game would turn out when I heard about it along with some of their fans. The question is: Does It Suck?

The Rundown

Smosh Food Battle: The Game is an action adventure game. You control Anthony as he goes on a quest to rescue  people from his town from monstrous donuts. You start on a world map as you make progress not only by beating levels, but collecting stars. You will eventually need stars to go on until the ending. You get them by exploring the levels solving puzzles and beating enemies, getting three per level. The game is basically Metroidvania as you will need to acquire and upgrade weapons in order to beat the game. You need weapons to further explore levels and you will need to upgrade them to beat harder enemies. The way you do this is by collecting food.

The upgrade system involves you forging food items and combining them into items like food or clothing. With this being a free and pay app on your phone, unless you can buy your items, unlike me, you will be replaying levels, a lot.

The Controls

The controls of the game are simple. You tap on everything with the touch screen of your phone. When you play as Anthony, you drag your finger on the screen to steer him in whichever direction you want him to go. When fighting enemies, depending on the weapon you have, you tap on the enemy to hit them. I had a bit of a problem with the controls in the first time playing. They seem to be all over the place. I would try to attack an enemy and would often bed up running into them leaving me wide open to get hit. It does take awhile to get use to and work around this. Luckily the enemy AI is simple and you can pick up their attack patters.

Music

Honestly, I’m not really a fan of the music. It’s somber and doesn’t match the feel of the game. It’s almost like you’re playing the musical score of Desperate Housewives while fighting giant donuts.

Visuals

For an app game on your phone or iPad, the visuals are nice. Ian and Anthony are drawn is a cartoonish style that is reminiscent of a cell-shaded Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. This matches the over the top style off the game. Playing the game with killer donuts and edible food weaponry is like something out of Looney Tunes. I mean your fighting donuts, would everything be drawn epically like Gears of Wars or something?

Final Verdict

So, does it suck? Not at all. Smosh Food Battle: The Game is pretty decent. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good. I’m impressed with how the final product turned out. Even if you are unwilling to fork over some cash for crystals or whatever, replaying the levels doesn’t seem like a chore as you can always find something new to explore or find new and interesting ways to destroy donut monsters. The ONLY drawback is how everything works with the touch screen. It’s not bad, it just can get get a tad bit annoying sometimes. It can leave you to be resourceful and work around it. Maybe that was Ian and Anthony’s plan? What the hell it’s free, play it. Smosh Food Battle: The Game gets 3.5 Killer Bearclaws out of 5.

Where the F*** is Star Fox Wii U?

Nintendo did a direct on Wednesday and we were treated to a lot of goodness. Finally we got an announcement that we are getting a Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask remake for the Nintendo 3DS. We got treated at the new DLC pack for Mario Kart 8 including seeing Link in action and the new Hyrule Circuit. We also got to take a look at how Amiibo will work on games like giving Link am new weapon for Hyrule Warriors and giving your Mii all new costumes for Mario Kart. All of these things look promising. Nintendo’s November Direct shows that we are going to be in for some good gaming for the Spring of next year. Despite all that Nintendo showed us one question stands: Where is the new Star Fox game?

A while back at E3, Shigeru Miyamoto displayed a demo of what could have been a new Star Fox game. Since then, the game has been slated to appear in 2015, along with other titles. Since the announcement of the new Star Fox game, there has been a ton of excitement from fans and it is for a good reason. It’s been a while since we have gotten a Star Fox game. Despite getting a remake of Star Fox 64 on the Nintendo 3DS, we haven’t gotten a REAL Star Fox game in eight years with Star Fox: Command for the Nintendo DS in 2006.  We are long overhauled for a new Star Fox game. The series is still in demand.

The weird thing is that they have been very hush on the game other than stating that they are working on it. We have seen other trailers and demos for the other games that are coming out for 2015 like Yoshi’s Wooly World, Splatoon, and Zelda Wii U. Will they ever show us something other than that test demo that we saw at E3 this year?  There are a few possibilities as to why they are keeping things underwraps. The first one is that they are probably going to feature a new mechanic to that will offer something different to the series giving it new life. Whatever they are experimenting on, they would have to be cautious as it won’t be something that drifts away from what made us love the series (I’m looking at you Star Fox Adventures…)

It seems like if we are ever going to see something, we will get a chance to at least see a teaser of a new Star Fox game next year around E3. While that seem like it would be the ideal spot to announce something, it will be problematic if they give us something in the Summer of 2015 as it will be hard to build up enough hype to get everyone to buy it in the Holiday 2015 season as the game would seem a bit rushed. Hopefully whatever they are doing with Star Fox Wii U Nintendo, please don’t keep us waiting TOO long…

Bayonetta 2: Too Sexy for Feminism?

Creator of Feminist Frequency, Anita Sarkeesian posted on her Twitter account disdain over the recently released game Bayonetta 2, criticizing it as being oversexualized attended for male gamers. She also attacked several sites for “turning a blind eye” and not mainly talking about how overtly sexual the character is. Along with Sarkersian, Polygon in a none accusing sexism manner bashed the new game, giving it a 7.5 for it being too sexy. The question is: Is Bayonetta too sexy and is it too sexy to the point where it is objectifying women?

First of all, this is not an attack on Ms. Sarkeesian at all. This is a disagreement. I respect and admire her a lot for exposing a well known problem we have in the gaming community with sexism. Any other time she would be right. There are several games out here that do overtly sexualize women to the point that their only purpose in the game is to just be a big pair of tits that talk. From the bikini ninja women (Kitana, Mileena, Jade, Tanya, & Skarlet) of Mortal Kombat to the women of DOA, which went to a kinda respectable fighting game to just pure fanservice by having them play volleyball and jiggle physics. Again, she would be right any other time, but her tirade against Bayonetta 2 is just over reaching.

Going back to the original question of whether Bayonetta the game and character is sexy, of course she is. The game screams sex. It is brazen with its sexual themes. It is full of sexual undertones and it is unapologetic for them. Is it sexy to the point where it is objectifying women? No. Again, the character Bayonetta is a very fanservicey character that is sexualized a lot, it’s not in the same way as the female characters in Mortal Kombat or the girl in that chainsaw zombie game. Those other female characters are sexualized for the sake of sex whereas Bayonetta isn’t. Living up to the origin of her name, bayonet, there is something deeper to Bayonetta’s sexuality. It is empowering. Her character is one who is fearless and will put it out there and won’t care if you are offended, especially when it comes to being sexy. She uses it and is actually in control with it. She puts it in your face, forcing you to deal with it. Bayonetta uses her sexuality as a weapon. One way you can compare Bayonetta to is a dominatrix. She exuberates sex and also used as a powerful force. She gets her jollies pummeling her enemies into oblivion and doing it in a sexy way.

Is it possible for a woman to be sexy, in control with it without it being considered to be pandering or her being objectified to men? It is, but some people can’t see it that way. There does seem to be an issue with some feminists and women’s sexuality. It’s almost and still sad to this day that a woman to this day cannot claim to be sexy without being slut shamed, even by the so called people who fight for her rights to do so. It’s almost like a few feminist that bashed Beyonce over her recent album for its adult tone. They are wrong for doing so. Sexuality is a good thing. It’s not something to be ashamed of. Owning it and not caring what people think is a bold and brave thing, especially if you are a woman. In a way, Bayonetta, the games and the character, are a fine example of feminism. She using something that people are afraid of against them. If that isn’t pro woman. I don’t know is.
What are your thoughts on Bayonetta being sexual? Is it TOO much and/oris it really objectifying?
